I spent almost 20 years in apartment management before I decided to make the move to real estate investing. As a high performing leasing specialist, I spent quality time with my prospective residents to get to know what they really needed, be it more space, specific amenities, closer to an employer, etc. My intimate knowledge of the local market allowed me to pair my prospects with the best possible apartment home I knew to be available, even if it wasn’t at my property. Although this went against my employers’ directives, I conducted myself this way because I saw the bigger picture; I recognized that we are talking about a person’s home, their safe space, and as such, I acknowledged that it was impossible to be the best choice for every single person who came through our doors. If I had simply followed orders, closing the deal with 100% of my prospects, it would have created more problems than benefit for our office and our residents. Meanwhile, every resident who chose an apartment based on my guidance usually stayed longer than two years, while absolutely raving about my company and my service to them. This is how I built small, happy communities, by knowing exactly what I can offer and who best benefits from that.
